The year’s first session of the #LetsTalkPeriod with Simply Suparnaa was successfully conducted virtually with 20 odd women from Dharamshala, District Kangra in Himachal Pradesh, on 12th January. WE received a request from the SABERA 2021 awardee in the Promising Responsible Business Category, Avcom Infotech Private Ltd. They were keen for us to conduct the menstrual hygiene session in the community they work in through their CSR initiatives.

Last year WE adapted to the online media and successfully conducted the #LetsTalkPeriod session virtually with Government-aided school teachers. To accommodate Avcom’s request, we tweaked the content making it relevant to the marginalised sector through the online medium.

The #LetsTalkPeriod content, as well as the teaching aids, are tailor-made to suit the different target groups for maximum understating and interaction. In the marginalised sector the aids often used are Placards, a silicone model of the reproductory system and video.

The two-hour workshop covers the physiology, monthly cycle, addresses facts vs myths and also delves on the ancient wisdom around menstruation. Steps in hygiene and a discussion on feminine hygiene solutions are an integral part of the interaction. The session encourages participants to share their experiences through the safe and open space created by the #LetsTalkPeriod platform. Another one of the mechanics used is sharing the learnings of the session through art.

#LetsTalkPeriod is an initiative of Woman Endangered (WE) that openly talks about PERIODS. Providing information, encouraging interaction and involving participants to become change agents in their respective communities, educational institutions or work organizations. The session helps address gender parity issues along with environmental & health hazards that we face through popular menstrual hygiene solutions. WE work through behaviour change communication, busting myths around menstruation with the aim to transform communities to be inclusive and sensitive to the needs of all.

Period Talks before Lockdown

WE organized a session to discuss her period with 30 marginalized women in the community of Trilok puri East Delhi before the Lockdown due to the Pandemic. Now, life like it was, has taken a back seat, leaving enough time to catch up on all pending work. Woman Endangered’s outreach with the #LetsTalkPeriod sessions has been completely pro bono for the beneficiary to date. And WE realized that all of the voluntary work around menstruation or the woman’s period that we did has not been documented on the site. It’s an opportune moment to catch up to speed and share work from when the world did not know of the deadly COVID virus.

The session was organized on 6th March 2019 with the support of Bal Aarogya in a community center, offering a safe, ventilated, and well-lit hall for the interaction amidst women. The session used the medium of placards with bright contextual images supported with font in Hindi describing the essence of periods. 30 medical-grade silicone cups were also distributed to take care of her feminine hygiene need for the next few years sustainably. A model of the reproductive system is also used through these sessions to introduce physiology as well as explain the usage of the menstrual cup. The last leg of the session was dedicated to watching a specially created video on yog asanas and simple home remedies to address common ailments experienced through the period.

The session is designed to cater to the specific target audience. The 120-minute module is divided into 3 parts such that it covers most aspects of feminine hygiene. Over the years, however, the feedback from the beneficiaries has become the most important part of the workshop. Almost 60 minutes are now dedicated to exchanging notes and addressing questions so that was also the case in Trilokpuri.

Menstrual Cup distribution: Breaking Taboos

The #LetstalkPeriod campaign is part of the Woman Endangered initiative to help affect a change in mindsets. Surnirman is an educational and cultural society run in the heart of the slum in east Delhi of the Shastri Mohalla area, Patparganj in East Delhi. Cynthia Kumar or Pinky Ma’am as she is popularly known started work through Sur Nirman, in the area which encloses over 10,000 jhuggi’s in the area. Her relentless efforts aligned with the help of the local MLA’s and the police has resulted in a small haven in the area where earlier prostitution and drugs were rampant among the youth. This is a story of change. WE volunteered to conduct feminine hygiene workshops and subsequent distribution of menstrual cups in the area. 70 women were gifted menstrual cups along with a workshop on how to use it and the long term benefits of saving money, protecting health and environment. A QnA with the women to clarify their doubts was also encouraged through interactive games.

Media Personalities breaking taboos with #LetsTalkPeriod

Through the recently concluded #enbaawards acknowledging the best of work done through the news broadcast media, we got a chance to showcase the #LetstalkPeriod campaign addressing the period taboo. It was heartening to see the endorsement that some of the most prominent Media personalities gave the campaign. All agreed with a need for a concerted effort to address the taboo regards periods. They further shared their own views regards the enormous health, economic and environmental hazards that lack of information or access to misinformation around menstruation that the period taboo is leading to.

We managed to capture some of those quotes and are sharing them with you here.

The #LetsTalkPeriod campaign aims to crowd source funds addressing the period taboo online and distribute menstrual cups offline in the slums.

In the process, we are also conducting feminine hygiene workshops with groups of women in slums. You too can be a part of the campaign by contributing at desiredwings.com/period. You can even volunteer for the next feminine hygiene workshop and personally gift a cup or cloth pads to the women present there.
